Education and Experience
I really like my job, and have worked in many settings with many different kinds of people.
I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the states of Washington and California, and now work almost exclusively in private practice. I have a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology and over 5,000 hours of clinical experience working with men, women, children, families and couples. I specialize in Asperger Syndrome and psychosocial oncology. Currently I facilitate support groups for Kids Konnected, a cancer non-profit, and SPA, a support group program for people with Asperger Syndrome and their spouses. Specialized training includes ASD and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Clinical memberships include the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. Training and practicum sites include Vista del Mar, AIDS Project Los Angeles, San Diego County’s TERM Team, and Alpha of San Diego. Products include a 10-week adolescent anger management curriculum program, parenting classes curriculums and have presentations on adults with Asperger Syndrome.
Philosophy
Therapy is a relationship built on trust. One of the most important aspects of therapy is the environment of safety; I aim to maintain this, above all. Therapy with me never involves judgment. Clients can trust that I will be honest, and maintain boundaries and confidentiality.
We all want results – that’s why I am pragmatic in my approach. I offer both short-term and long-term therapy options.
I also see therapy as a journey of self discovery. We’re usually happier when we’re living according to who we really are. Yet many of us reach middle age, and find they have never really known themselves – they’ve been busy living life! I aim to help clients remove obstacles, so that their lives reflect their heartfelt goals and potential. I use my training and life experience to help clients review and evaluate their life situation, and am a support through the process of change.
Therapeutic Styles and Approaches
My core approach is to be a very effective, active and insightful listener. My approach is solution-focused, and I aim to provide support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges.
Relationships are central to wellbeing and fulfillment in life. I use research-based approaches to help clients clarify feelings, improve communication and strengthen and deepen connections. Our ability to connect with others is vital to our ability to feel a sense of belonging and meaning. Loneliness can be an important indicator that something is wrong – don’t ignore it! Therapy can help increase relating and social skills, so that relationships are a source of joy, not pain.
I am proud to have helped people from all parts of the world, from differing cultures, with differing ideas about religion, sexuality, gender identity, marriage and love. I pride myself on being straight forward and an honest person who wants to help connect individuals with their authentic and true selves. Remember – no judgment.
Thank you for inquiring about me. I look forward to helping you in reaching your goals and creating the kind of life you have always envisioned. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment for in-office therapy, please see my contact page for more information.
