Cary Terra has worked extensively with children of all ages, including adolescents and children as young as five years old. Trained in play therapy and the use of sandtray, Cary has experience in bereavement, divorce, work with blended families , psychosocial oncology, grief support, structural family therapy and trauma. What will therapy for my child be like?

When working with children, I strive to provide a warm and inviting, child-friendly environment. Children quickly come to know that they are safe, and feel valued in their uniqueness. With respect and empathy, I help kids learn appropriate limits, develop new coping skills and strengthen their self-esteem. Children should leave sessions feeling less burdened, listened to and empathized with.

Treatment is individualized, after consulting with the parent(s) and becoming familiar with the child. Children of different ages, genders or temperaments respond to different interventions. Therapy is child-centered, proceeds according to the child’s readiness and can offer benefits that last. As a Seattle child counselor I work with parents and children to address issues causing pain in the family, school setting and other contexts.

With prompt and skilled intervention, therapy for children is often more brief than for adults, as they have had a shorter time in which to develop symptoms and are generally flexible and resilient. I am always willing to provide a free phone consultation for parents to determine whether or not the presenting issue seems to warrant therapy and to provide suggestions as to the best possible approach.
